Installing Skype on Fedora

Needs / Issues

  • Install Skype (32b) on Fedora-based distro (32/64 bits) using YUM.

Audience

  • Administrator / Power user;
  • End user.

Initial Setting

  • Fedora-based Linux distribution, with the Yellowdog Updater Modified (YUM):
    • Fedora 14 (tested);
    • Fedora 16 (tested).
  • Architecture can be either 32 bits or 64 bits.

Steps

  • In a shell session (as root):

    Skype logo

    1. Install Qt and audio requirements:
      yum install qt-x11.i686 libXScrnSaver.i686 libXv-devel.i686 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686
       
    2. Create Skype YUM repository:
      vi /etc/yum.repos.d/skype.repo
      Write the following:
      [skype]
      name=Skype Repository
      baseurl=http://download.skype.com/linux/repos/fedora/updates/i586/
      gpgkey=http://www.skype.com/products/skype/linux/rpm-public-key.asc
      enabled=1
      gpgcheck=0

      Note that the Skype RPM is not signed (hence, the disabled gpgcheck).
       
    3. Install Skype:
      yum install skype
       
  • In a shell session (as user):
    1. Run Skype:
      skype &
